Promote Literacy at Home
Read and write with your child every night
-Let your child point to each word as he/she reads aloud to you.
-Encourage “inventive spelling.” (children write the sounds he/she hears in words.
-Have your child retell the story in his/her own words.
Ask your child who the characters are in the story and use describing words to tell about them. Have your child tell you about the setting. (where and when the story takes place)
-Next, encourage your child to sequence the events in the story using the words beginning, middle and end or first, next and last.
-Have your child predict what might happen next in the story.
-Visit the local library and check out books that interest your child. Encourage your child to check out books that he/she can read.
